Post-purchase survey questions for Shopify stores

Twelve questions worth asking after checkout, what each one tells you, and which ones to skip.

The thank-you page gets one or two questions before customers leave. Choose them by the decision they help you make.

Where did they find you?

1. How did you hear about us? The core attribution question. Offer your main channels plus “A friend”, “Podcast” and “Other”.

2. Which podcast / creator / friend? A follow-up shown only after certain answers. This is where the most useful detail comes from.

3. Where did you first see us? Different from question 1: it asks for the first touch. Useful if you suspect one channel starts journeys and another closes them.

Why did they buy?

4. What almost stopped you from buying today? Answers point straight at checkout fixes: shipping cost, sizing, delivery time, trust.

5. What made you choose us over other options? Tells you what to say in ads.

6. Who is this for? “For me” versus “a gift” changes how you market around holidays.

How do they feel?

7. How likely are you to recommend us to a friend? (0–10) Net Promoter Score. Most useful as a trend, and more useful after delivery than at checkout.

8. How easy was checkout? (1–5) Ask only if you’ve just changed checkout.

What next?

9. What else would you like us to sell? Product ideas from people who already buy.

10. How often do you buy this kind of product? Helps you time replenishment emails.

11. Would you like to hear about new products by text message? Better asked with your opt-in tools, not in a survey.

12. Anything else you’d like to tell us? Open text. Few people answer, but the ones who do are worth reading.

Questions to skip

A good starting set

Start with question 1 and its follow-up. After a month, add one question from the “Why did they buy?” group and rotate it every few months. That keeps your attribution data steady while still learning something new.
